Giving Tuesday

Tuesday, December 3, 2019

The Junior League of Peoria participates in Giving Tuesday as a way to extend our ability to positively impact our community beyond the contributions of our membership. The social media messaging that marks Giving Tuesday gives us a platform to educate our family, friends, supporters and the public about our mission to increase food security for the most vulnerable: children.

Kids in the Kitchen

We are on a mission – alongside other community partners – to increase access to healthy, fresh food by 20% in 2020 for children and families living in the 61605 and 61603 zip codes. I invite you to join us in our efforts to provide nutrition education and 1,000 meals for the people we serve. A donation in any amount can make a big difference. Just $10 provides a healthy meal for a family of 4.

Every week, Junior League of Peoria members lead hands-on Kids in the Kitchen cooking classes with teens, children and their moms. We share information about nutrition and healthy meals and snacks and teach food preparation and cooking skills. We also provide take-home bags with all the ingredients needed to make the recipe again at home.

In the summer months, we provide weekly programming at the community garden at Glendale Commons. Working with a master gardener and Phoenix Community Development Services, we teach children and their parents how to care for the garden, how to properly harvest produce so that it continues to grow and how to eat and use the fresh vegetables.

All of these efforts give our members the training and skills they need to become leaders in our community as we work together to ensure everyone has access to fresh, healthy food every day.

We’re proud to be a part of this global celebration of giving. Giving Tuesday isn’t just about fundraising, it’s about communities banding together and giving of their time, power, skills, expertise, and resources.

About Giving Tuesday

Giving Tuesday is a global giving movement that has been built by individuals, families, organizations, businesses and communities in all 50 states and in countries around the world. Giving Tuesday harnesses the collective power of a unique blend of partners to transform how people think about, talk about, and participate in the giving season. It inspires people to take collective action to improve their communities, give back in better, smarter ways to the charities and causes they believe in, and help create a better world. Giving Tuesday demonstrates how every act of generosity counts, and that they mean even more when we give together.
